Eurovision and football fans boost Luton airport
Travel to the Eurovision Song Contest and European football finals helped boost passenger numbers using Luton airport by 10% last month.
The increase over May last year to a record 1.6 million passengers for the month followed a strong April for the Bedfordshire airport.
People travelling to Tel Aviv for Eurovision increased 9% in May, making it the fourth most popular destination.
Additional flights carrying fans to both Baku and Madrid for the Europa League and UEFA Champions League finals also helped drive up the figures.
Amsterdam, Bucharest and Budapest were the top three destinations served.
May saw the airport revamp its fast track security lane, open between 4am and 9pm free of charge to El Al and easyJet plus passengers but costing other £4 online in advance or £6 on the day of travel.
Airport CEO Alberto Martin said: “As our May figures show, growth continues steadily at the airport following a record breaking April.
The re-launch of our fast track security product is yet another example of how we’re transforming the passenger experience following our £160 million redevelopments.”
Luton airport handled 16.6 million passengers last year, an increase of 5% on 2017.
