MANCHESTER Airport has cancelled dozens of flights to and from the city due to fuel supply problems, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
A total of 69 flights have been cancelled to and from Manchester Airport, an airport spokesman confirmed. As many as 37 flights were arrivals and 32 were departures. The spokesman said: “Due to a power issue this afternoon there is currently an issue with the fuel supply at the airport. Engineers are currently on site to fix the issue and we are working with airlines to try and minimise the impact.”
Some passengers have been waiting on grounded aircraft for almost two hours.
Other flights have faced massive delays after problems emerged on Sunday afternoon.
Some inbound aircrafts have been diverted to other airports, including Liverpool, but other international flights abroad have been cancelled.Chaos erupted on Sunday afternoon after dozens of planes at Manchester Airport were unable to re-fuel and take off.
Furious passengers have described the situation as “absolute carnage”, “chaos” and a “total shambles”.
One furious passenger at the airport said: “Brilliant… sitting in Charleroi Airport being told I won’t be home in time for work in the morning. An issue with Manchester Airport! It’s quite annoying considering I’m new to the job!!!!”
Another wrote: “My poor brother in law, sister and 2-year-old nephew have been sat in a plane at CDG for 3 hours. Flight back to Mcr now cancelled. Still waiting to hear next steps. No work tomorrow.”
Martin Keogh, from Northenden, was meant to fly to Palma at 5pm with his wife and twin boys with Jet2.
He told the Sun: “At about 4.30pm we were told there was a site wide power disruption which was affecting refuelling.
“I’ve not seen any aircraft take off since.
“You can imagine everyone is sat around it is a bit of a nightmare.”
Passengers reported being stuck in massive queues for hours.
One said on Twitter: “Stranded at Manchester Airport, was supposed to be on the 17:45 flight to Prague. We don’t live in Manchester- will we be reimbursed for our flight and a train home?? Help been stuck in a non-moving queue for hours this isn’t acceptable.”
Another disgruntled passenger said: “Still waiting to disembark our cancelled flight as ALL the buses are being used to ferry people are being used. Staff are doing their best here but someone higher up the chain deserves sacking for this shambles.”
Manchester Airport said: “Due to a power issue this afternoon there is currently an issue with the fuel supply at the airport and we have engineers on-site working to fix this. Please speak to your airline for specific flight information and updates.”
